TORRE DEL LAGO (TOWER OF THE LAKE)

Torre del Lago (Tower of the Lake) is made up of immense beaches, fresh pine forests and countless pubs and discotheques, which makes this city an ideal tourist stop not only to relax but also to spend the whole night amid local entertainment. Its name originates from a tower that in the XV-XVI century stood near the lake of Massaciuccoli. In 1938 the name Puccini was added to the original name of Torre del Lago, giving honor to the great composer who lived in Torre del Lago and composed many lyrical works of great importance. The residence of Puccini and his tomb are located near the lake of Massaciuccoli and are visited by tourists from all over the world. Unique to Torre del Lago is the Puccini Festival, an open-air theatre surrounded by greenery in front of Puccini's house and dedicated to Giacomo Puccini, taking place in the summer months from July to August. Here countless operas can be appreciated including Madama Butterfly, Turandot, La Bohème, Tosca and not only represented by great opera stars, but also under the direction of important conductors.
