FORTE DEI MARMI

Forte dei Marmi (Fort of the marbles) is a holiday town that takes its name from the namesake fort at the centre of the city, commissioned by the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo to defend the dock. The marble coming from the Apuan Alps, not far away, was transported to the jetty and then placed on ships, ready to sail. Inside the fort, there is the Museum of Satire and Caricature. It is a fashionable place, with many bars, shops, discos, and restaurants all around Piazza Garibaldi, and is the meeting point of many protagonists of politics, finance, entertainment and sports, It is characterized by a beautiful pier built in the 6th century, which was very important for the marble trade, a beach with fine golden sand, a square composed of numerous luxury shops, bars, and restaurants, but also of countless nightclubs along the coast, among which, very well known, is to be mentioned the Capannina di Franceschi. Forte dei Marmi is also characterized by large tree-lined streets and pine forests.
